What Does It Mean to Serve with Mission and Purpose? The Lessons of Ignatius of Loyola

What does it mean to dedicate your life to service? For many people this may sound like an act of self-sacrifice, but Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order, saw service as the highest expression of love and meaning. The phrase that defines the Jesuits’ mission, “Omnia ad maiorem Dei gloriam” (“All for the greater glory of God”), emphasizes the idea that every aspect of our lives can be dedicated to something greater.

In the Loyola tradition, service is not just a physical act, but a spiritual attitude. It is total surrender – not because we have to, but because we are willing to give our best. The Jesuits teach that true devotion comes from inner choices made with joy and humility. However, this choice is not always easy. It requires perseverance, discipline and the ability to see beyond our momentary desires.

The modern world often strives for individuality and personal success. But what if service could be part of our personal mission? Ignatius Loyola offers practices that help people find this balance. His spiritual exercises, for example, encourage meditation and introspection that lead us to a deeper understanding of our own motivations. It’s not just a matter of religion, but of awareness: discovering how we can use our talents and time to make the lives of others better.

Service, as Loyola understands it, requires no grand gestures. Sometimes it is in the little things – in the way we listen to others, in our willingness to help without expecting a return, or even in the diligence with which we carry out our daily tasks. It is an act of love and respect for the world around us.

The next time you feel the urge to do something meaningful, ask yourself: how can I serve others in a way that brings joy to them as well as to me?
